In the article, Kurz talks about the concept of using a web-based balance tool to algebraically demonstrate equality. These tools encourage the Common Core Standards of Algebra. For example, The article illustrates a balance tool called the Balancing Act in which the kindergarteners to balance a bird feeder and a birdhouse by placing objects such as bird food, cocoons, and birds on the balance. This concept correlates to CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.1 “Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, …show more content…
I never thought of using balance beam as a tool to learn algebraic equality. I think the balance will be very effective for students because they will be able to develop “mental image of how the influence of operations have on equations.” Since technology is becoming more common and most students are more comfortable and familiar with technology, using the web-based balance will help enhance the learning experience for students. Some of these tools are like games for children which will create a fun, learning environment for children. I learned that algebra and algebraic thinking are taught in all grade level including …show more content…
I think this article was very helpful and useful for all teachers because algebra and algebraic expressions are difficult to teach students especially elementary grades. In addition to this web-based tool, I would also have students do a constructive activity such as bringing a physical balance beam and put objects on it. I think having a physical object for students to manipulate helps enhance their learning because children do like to be able to have something that they can actually feel and experience. I would also have the students work in groups of two or three for cooperating learning in this
