Aircraft Carriers Essay

William Cohen, former Secretary of Defense, clearly explained the mission of the Navy when he stated, “If you don’t have that forward deployed presence, you have less of a voice, less of an influence” (“The Carriers,” n.d.). The Navy constantly strives to improve and modify their technology and tactics in order to maintain a strong military and stay one step ahead of the enemy (Wilson, 1966). A vital transition for the United States was on 20 March 1922 when the USS Jupiter (AC3) was converted to the Navy’s first aircraft carrier, the USS Langley (CV1) (Underwood, 2015). The creation and improvements of aircraft carriers have had a major impact on maritime supremacy as seen through its impact on naval tactics, leadership and training, and inter-service …show more content…
An aircraft carrier has advantages within the Navy because it does not require permission for landing of aircraft or over flight rights, as well as the Navy does not need to build bases in varying countries that it would cause disputes because the aircraft carrier itself is a base (“The Carriers,” n.d.). Aircraft carriers are vitally important when it comes to aircraft because they provide a base for the aircraft, a refueling station, and numerous other attributes (Holloway, 2007). Aircraft carriers impact the Navy because they grant the Navy a greater worldwide force through another form of striking power: the aircraft aboard the aircraft carrier (Hobbs, 2009; Underwood, 2015). Heavy aircraft that contain a great payload or aircraft in general are able to deploy off of aircraft carriers with the assistance of the hydraulic catapult. The ability to launch aircraft off of an aircraft carrier strengthens the Navy’s maritime supremacy because of the combat readiness (Underwood, 2015). As aircraft carriers are able to launch heavier, more powerful aircraft it results in a much greater thrust that affects the entire flight deck. Because of the powerful thrust aircraft produce jet blast deflectors are used in order to allow for the aircraft to be positioned closer to one another as well as the departing aircraft, which allows for a rapid interval of the aircraft (Hobbs, 2009; Wilson,

The Marine Corps Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) has made strides towards reaching the goals set forth in Expeditionary Force 21 (EF 21); however, the MEU has also fallen short in other areas and will need to evolve to fulfill the goals envisioned in EF 21, particularly in developing an amphibious landing craft, increasing littoral maneuverability, and engineering new platforms to increase logistical capabilities. A line of effort in EF 21 was “increasing naval integration” by “strengthen[ing] our partnership with the Navy, Coast Guard, and SOF [Special Operations Forces].”1 In certain aspects the Marine Corps has evolved to strengthen that partnership and an example of this strengthened partnership is the development and use of the USS San Antonio. Although the USS San Antonio was commissioned prior to EF 21, the ship is an example of not only the integration of the Navy and Marine Corps by its design; it also enhanced the command and control (C2) capability with the inclusion of a combat information center, joint intelligence center, and supporting coordination center.2 This increased C2 capability was a focus area of EF 21 and a meets the goal of maintaining C2 even as command structures change and the MEU conducts disaggregated…

Since the program’s initial inception, the intended mission and required capabilities for UCLASS have come into question, and are currently mired in Congressional debate about whether the role of the UCLASS should be primarily surveillance, with limited strike capability, operating in less contested environments, or primarily a largely strike role, with limited surveillance capability, operating in highly contested environments. These debates have resulted in a delay of the Navy’s UCLASS schedule by approximately 3 years for the award of a contract, and by approximately 2 years for operational capability (Government Accountability Office, 2015, p. 4; Gertler, 2015, p.…

Introduction The United States Air Force’s foundational tenet for command and control of air and space forces is “centralized control and decentralized execution” executed by a Joint Forces Air Component Commander through an Air Operations Center. Centralized control and decentralized execution is the fundamental organizing principle for the United States Air Force and affects everything from presentation of forces to weapon systems to doctrine to professional military education. This long seated tenet evolved through peace and war to have air minded leadership of airpower and ensure commanders understood and appropriately employed the unique characteristics of airpower rather than diluting the tactical, operational, and strategic effects of airpower. Limited by the state of technology during the evolution from World War One through World War Two, air forces were centrally managed by a theater level air commander and missions were executed by subordinate air…

This may be most evident in navigating several competing issues from institutional and operational Navy and Marine Corps three and four-star flag and general officers resulting in three key shipbuilding milestones reached during Col Mundy’s tenure. First, Congress appropriated one billion dollars for a twelfth ship of the LPD 28 class; second, the DoN, DoD, and Congress approved using the LPD 17 hull form for the LX(R), a replacement program for the landing ship dock (LSD); and third, congressional support for components so the first LX(R) could be funded sooner, reducing the current amphibious ship…

Historically, armed forces adapt tactics and invent new defensive and offensive equipment as a response to adversaries’ technology. The invention of the airplane illustrates this type of advance. Military forces responded to the airplane’s ability to conduct reconnaissance, bomb targets, attack air and ground targets, and perform sustainment operations by developing air defense technology. In World War I, the United States conducted air defense operations using three-inch anti-aircraft guns.…

Japan remained an innovator in aircraft carrier design and construction during the years leading to World War II, operating nine of them by 1941. Their largest carriers of the war were the Akagi and Kaga, each capable of launching over 90 aircraft. The Allies, however, also had extremely effective carriers. British ships, such as the Ark Royal and the Eagle, and American ships, such as Yorktown and Enterprise, each carried 100 aircraft or more. The largest aircraft carriers, such as the Enterprise were over 800 feet (245 meters) long and 100 feet (30 meters) wide, and carried almost 3,000…
