Airborn Reflection

Improved Essays
I would like to thank you for beautiful novel Airborn, for it has truly inspired me. Intrigued by the quick summary on the back of the book, I took it upon myself to read the book itself. I grew attached to the characters, and I found myself unable to put the book down at times. I loved how I could somehow relate to each character throughout the novel, whether they were small similarities or rather big ones. Each character stood out to me in a unique way that changed the way I think and inspired me to act as they do.

I found Matt a rather admirable character. His humble persona and caring nature made him impossible to dislike. He proved himself as a kind-hearted soul through many of his actions, but the one stood out to me. Matt worked hard to provide for his sister and

I love how she never ceases to give out her opinion, and is a rather feisty character in the story. I certainly relate to Kate’s strong opinion of her gender making her have to work harder in earning someone’s—particularly men. By reading about Kate and growing close to her character throughout the book, I thrived to resemble Kate through her vivacious and hearty opinions. Although her energetic persona impressed me, her determination astounded me the most. Kate refused to simply give up, and I found that inspiring, for I often find myself lacking determination in many areas of my life. How do you find the courage to stop at nothing to achieve your goal, even thought it may put you into danger?

Through your novel I acquired some different views on life. Your characters of Matt Cruse and Kate de Vries, taught me valuable life lessons. Matt taught me that my pushing myself, I could achieve dreams that at first seemed impossible. Kate taught me to never hold back on presenting my own opinion, for through my strong opinions I may gain other peoples respect. Both of these characters taught me to stay humble and determined, and never give up on a

The dictionary definition of objectification is to refer to a person as an object, an appellation which usually pertains to the mistreatment of women. The objectification of women is usually most evident in all types of media, including short stories, for instance, Tim O’Brien’s The Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong. This short story, in particular, places some verification that men had seen women as toys for the men’s “entertainment and education” (68). As soon as Mary Anne Belle “came in by helicopter” (67) into the camp, there was a widespread of “some envy” (68) among the men who “genuinely liked her” (68). “The guys appreciated … the kind of come-get-me energy, coy and flirtatious” (68) ambience that Mary Anne Belle gave off.…

Those are all qualities that help people overcome obstacles. The articles “The Contender” by Derek Burnett, “Paralympic Star Makes History On NBA Stage” by E. Lancaster, and “Life in the Red” by Benedict Carey all show how people overcame obstacles to achieve their dreams. After reading and annotating articles about a determined Kyle Maynard, a motivational speaker Blake Leeper, and the patient LaKeisha community, one could make the choice to be strong, to have a positive attitude, and to ‘cut out’ what’s not important. In turn, these strategies can help one achieve one’s dreams, overcome life’s obstacles, and be resourceful in helping one achieve their goals so that one day they may become the person they want to be.…

The female’s character displays this as well, showing a quiet shy side of her when embarrassed about not living up to the male’s standards of a female’s living quarters, later also displaying her character in regular relaxed conversation with the male, as well as a side of being awkward and passive to the male’s proposal at a kiss. Overall this passage does create a richness and diversity within characters displaying this chosen lens, and it does a very effective job at doing…

The novel, Kindred, exposed me to the un- taught lifestyles of the southern people during slavery. It left me with questions, jaw dropping moments, and surprises, but yet not, of the life styles that were practiced during the 1800s that today we might see in different forms. One event that troubled me the most was reenactment of the slave market. Kevin and Dana were walking away from the Weylin’s home and slave quarters to talk in private when they saw slave children reenacting a slave market. Then Dana said, “Even the games they play are preparing them for their future.”…

Fiction Belongs in Education Fiction is not real, but it is a real life experience, situation, and story that the reader can relate and learn from. “Fiction, because it is not about someone who actually lived in the real world, always has the possibility about being oneself”(Orson Scott Card). Fiction makes the reader become the main character or actor in a story who goes through and overcomes obstacles that are seen in everyday living and society. As readers we learn from fiction and some use fiction in real life. The main work used is a piece of fiction that is the first novel of a trilogy named Crank written by Ellen Hopkins.…
