1. Does the United States Air Force (USAF) current physical fitness program produce adequately physically fit airmen? No, the present USAF physical fitness standard does not take into consideration the mission of the USAF, “to fly, fight, and win… in air, space, and cyberspace.1” The current physical fitness standard focuses on airmen being able to lift a portion of their own body weight and attempts to identify airmen that appear to be overweight in uniform. The USAF should focus on how to ensure airmen are physically fit to be able to perform their job duties and be able to adequately respond to active shooter and Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical (NBC) attacks. The best solution to fix the present problem is to re-write AFI 36-2905 and discontinue the use of the current physical fitness assessment. The new physical fitness test that will consist of all airmen wearing the ABU with boots. The airmen will be held to an equal standard of having to complete the Timed Physical Fitness Assessment Course within four minutes. This will be a pass or fail course. The course should consist of the airmen sprinting 25 meters to a cone serpentine course which they will have to run and serpentine around five cones. Next the airmen would have to drag or carry a 175 lb. mannequin a distance of 15 meters, then run five meters to a three flight staircase where they will have to run to the top and back down to the bottom before the maximum time of four minutes elapses. Apart of the test should be a height and weight assessment to determine if the airmen appear fit. This assessment will have specific weight maximum specifications due to the person’s height. This test should be conducted every quarter to ensure all airmen and their commanders can receive constant feedback concerning their physical fitness level.
