It could be argued that Ahab considers Moby Dick to be a representative of all things evil and that he wants to take on the structure of nature by defeating this omniscient creature. The captain comes across as mad and delusional as he rants about attacking the “inscrutable thing” behind the “mask”, the force behind the façade that is the whale. In order to understand Ahab’s obsession, the reader must try to understand what he wants to get out of killing the whale, is it the actual whale or the metaphorical power that he sees behind the whale? A convincing argument can be made that Ahab wants to be God and is offended that he should have to bear the insult of any authority beyond himself. The Wampanoag believes that “a benevolent spirit threw [the whales] upon the shore for their particular use” (27). Whales, or any animal life in general, are treated with reverence and devoutness because the natives worshipped Pantheism, appreciation and respect for nature. The pioneering English Puritan attitudes were direct opposites of the natives.…

Blackfish released on July 19, 2013 by the producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite. The film shows orcas being trapped in SeaWorld for human entertainment. They are trapped in small swimming pools where they have no place to hide or no place where they can be away from the rest of the orcas. The argument it makes is that orcas should be free and not in pools. The trainers at SeaWorld believe that SeaWorld should close and let all the killer whales live their rest of their life in the ocean where they belong.…

Person vs society conflict is a dominant conflict that all of the characters must face throughout Whale Talk. The quote above is a demonstration of how each of the characters contrast from what society accepts, and therefore the conflicts that each of them face. The most significant conflict faced by the Cutter High School Swim Team is that of the closed-minded discrimination of students to their peers who are different. Because of the fact that there are characters who discriminate against others, T.J. feels as though it is not fair for the jocks to get all the recognition and attention.…

The notion of not being oneself and being aware of it is something that is difficult to accept, even more so when trying to change such circumstances, which in some cases are controlled by something other than the individual. In Moby Dick Ahab is presented to have such a dilemma. He is someone who is driven by another force, a force that he is not fully aware of. In this way Ahab is more than Ahab, he is a concept, and idea, a controlled machine. He becomes the leader of a ship, who he himself id an outsider to, and who he “himself” has no control over.…

The home of the majestic creature, the killer whale, takes place in the sea; that is where they belong. In 2010, a killer whale that belongs to SeaWorld killed a trainer at SeaWorld’s Shamu Stadium in Orlando, Florida as stated in SeaWorld Trainer Killed by Killer Whale; however there is an argument on whether the killer whale genuinely killed the trainer. The news reports claimed that the trainer named Dawn Brancheau died from the attack of the killer whale; thus this tragic event shocked the whole nation. There have been several descriptions on how the trainer died. The reporters, John Couwels and Brian Todd, wrote the article “SeaWorld Trainer Killed by Killer Whale” to mainly highlight the perspectives of the witnesses and workers from…

The plot that Whale set up in the beginning of the story is restricting and limiting Karloff’s (actor who cast the monster) performance in the film because we already know that the monster has a “criminal brain,” and he needs to act like that he has the gene of a “criminal.” It is also foreshadowing what will happen for the rest of the film. Furthermore, the lack of eloquence of the monster in the film is emphasizing his ugliness and violent. According…

When saying something is a “white whale,” one is describing something that they are obsessed about. However, the saying also means that no matter how hard one tries, that thing will never be obtained. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey’s first use of white whale imagery is an allusion to the novel Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. In Moby Dick, a seafaring captain fiercely attempts and fails to kill an elusive and mysterious white whale. Consequently, one could argue that the whale in Moby-Dick represents anything unattainable and sought-out in life.…

He also comes to find that measuring the whale will not bring him any closer to what he, Ahab, and Melville are looking for. He tries to take scientific measures of whales, dissect them, and think of them in terms of their skulls and by doing this he is, “simplifying Melville’s quest for spiritual certainty” (Schneider). He is reducing God’s power because he is suggesting that he can be measured in an “earthly” way and that it can be done by humans. Ishmael is the religious figure of the novel and his effort to gauge the size of the whale can relate to Melville and even religion’s confusion in how to interpret God in the 19th century. Even priests had a difficult time with the possibility of knowing God and how to get past the uncertainty of his existence.…
