2.1 Ageratum conyzoides Ageratum is derived from Greek word, which is “a geras” meaning non-aging, referring to the longevity of the flowers or the whole plant. The word “conyzoides” is derived from word “konyz” meaning resembles (M.X et al., 2016). Ageratum conyzoides is belongs to the Asteraceae family. Plant species in this family are herbaceous plants which trees and shrubs are rare. This plant is very common in West Africa and Asia. It has softly hairy stems and leaves, erect and branched annual weeds up to 80-90 cm in height. It contains purple and white flowers and also contains fruits that are achenes and easily dispersed. This plant is called ‘Billy Goat Weeds’ because it has strong bad odour like goats (Thakur et al., 2014). The …show more content…
It was used as purgative, febrifuge, treatment of ulcers and wound dressing caused by burns. In Africa, it was used for mental and infectious diseases treatment, headaches and dsypnea. In Cameroon, it was used for uterine problems. The leaves were crushed in water and gave as an emetic. Pneumonia also can be treated by rubbing the leaves on the patient’s chest. The Rf values depends on the nature of adsorbent and solveny systems. To get the unknown compound is identical to known compound structure, it is necessary to run two samples and more side by side on the same TLC plate at same concentration. In fact, low polarity compounds have higher Rf values than higher polarity compounds. The adsorptivity of compounds increases with the increased of polarity which means the more polar the compound, the stronger it binds to the adsorbent. Higher polarity compounds require solvents of higher polarity while low polarity compounds require low polarity
