Charlie Hebdo first appeared in 1970 as a companion to the
monthly Hara-Kiri magazine, after a previous title was banned
for mocking the death of former French President Charles De
Gualle. In 1981 publication ceased, but the magazine was
resurrected in 1992. The magazine is published every
Wednesday, with special editions issued on an unscheduled
basis. In 2007 the Grand Mosque of Paris began criminal
proceedings against the chief-editor of Charlie Hebdo, Philippe
Val, under France’s Hate Speech laws for publicly abusing a
group on the ground of their religion. The lawsuit was limited
