As a care worker, working in an Aged Care Facility, I am involved in interacting with residents, family members, nurses, managers and other care workers. Therefore, the focus of this assessment is to analyse how language is used, including different levels of modality in different situations of interaction. Trevu House is a residential care facility situated in Gawler East at 1-13 Deland Ave. It offers two types of care; palliative and non-dedicated respite care. Accommodation offered at this facility is single rooms with an ensuite. It offers a range of activities and facilities including broad band internet. The facility has an interesting slogan which states; “caring for old people not aged care”.

I always observe family members and friends of residents coming in to see their beloved ones. This unit is for those residents you are independent, this means that they do not require much attention; the main things we do is reminding them to attend to their activities of daily living and sometimes take their clothes to the laundry. If you do something for them they do appreciate it as long as you are maintaining their independence. We communicate with the family members either in person or through telephone. The language used when engaging in these forms of communication is formal and professional since they want to know you are competent and how their beloved ones are going, in terms of behaviour, health and engaging with others in the facility. This kind of situation requires you to be fairly open and speak fluently so that the people who you are talking to can really understand what is going on. Therefore, this means the language you use should the polite and quiet easy to understand. Furthermore, the tone you use should be able to show that you sure about what you are talking about. You should always be able to tolerate any kind of language used by family members and residents too. A good example of that is when I saw Mr B; he is an old man who is at risk of having a fall, so whenever he walks he should be holding onto a walking frame. The purpose of these staff meetings is to reflect on how people are working together and to see if there are any improvements that can be made. It is important to attend because each staff meeting may have a different objective, depending upon what is trying to be achieved; the meeting may be designed to provide information, encourage discussion, boost morale or inspire. Therefore, the language used in these meetings is informative and precise. Everyone is given a chance to express their opinion on an issue of concern. The modality used when staff are speaking at the meeting depends on what is being talked about. I remember when one of the registered nurses was reminding carers to lower the beds of the residents whenever the resident is lying on it. He said, “You must lower the bed down whenever the resident is lying on the bed, because if they fall down, they would be injured.” The nurse used high modality here “must” because it was an important safety issue. Another example of a level of modality in speaking is when I had the performance appraisal which the facility manager. I received a letter from Trevu which informed me that was scheduled for performance appraisal with the manager. At first I was quite nervous because I thought that I was going to be fired away.
