In this metaphor, Nanny tells Janie that the African American women are the mule of the world. Nanny starts it off by talking about a white man being on top of the society and looking down at African American people. This “load” they talk about would be something like a burden. This passage starts off the entire book, it basically puts you in a spot where you can see your destined future/ hopes and they are almost within grasp across the distance but you could never know if that would actually make you happy or not.
