Numerous research have been conducted in order to find the advantages of optimism on physical health, mental health, coping style, career goals and social relationships. One specific advantage that was studied by Andrew Steptoe and his colleagues was the effect optimism had on healthy behavioral choice of older people in London. Health behavior such as smoking, alcohol consumption and physical activity were factors used for their research. Optimism was positively related to healthy behavioral choices and negatively associated with poor self-rated health. A combination of behavioral and psychobiological process promotes healthy ageing (Steptoe et al., 2006).

Due to grandfather’s hard work, I had a roof over my head, warm clothes during the winter and food on the table. I believe this played a crucial role in the development of optimism during my childhood years. After researching the origin, causes and developmental process of optimism, I could relate back to my early childhood and agree that the conditions in which I was raised under made it favorable to obtain this trait. I had a secure environment, showered with love and lived within a stable socioeconomic status.
