Some abnormalities are very difficult to find or to be absolutely certain about. Some conditions, like for example hydrocephalus, may not have been obvious at the time of the earlier scan. The position of the baby in the uterus has a great deal to do with how well one sees certain organs such as the heart, face and spine. Sometimes a repeat examination has to be scheduled the following day, in the hopes the baby has moved so then the disadvantage of this is that it can be time consuming. Images tend also to be much clearer in patients with less body weight with more amniotic fluid, and frustratingly fuzzy in the bigger women, particularly if there is not much amniotic fluid as in cases of growth restriction. One can witness a fetus smiling, frowning, sticking out its tongue, sucking its fingers, and more. The 2D scans do not allow for such detailed studies.10 With the ability to see such detailed images, more patients are opting for 3D and 4D scans even when they are not medically necessary. In fact, many centers have opened in order to provide these services to expectant parents. They pay high fees in order to receive multiple images of their baby’s face and even video of their baby’s movements. This represents an issue because studies have shown that sonography is safe when it is used appropriately when medically necessary.…

Sonographers are skilled clinicians who perform ultrasound studies as ordered by physicians for their patients. The images created by sonographers are then used to determine a medical diagnosis. How Technology Has Changed Fetal Ultrasound Introduction Technology has changed fetal ultrasound by allowing abnormalities to be found earlier and cured more precisely, being able to accurately judge anything from gender to age, and creating a better picture for the parents. “Fetal ultrasound is the safest way to check for problems and get information on the fetus” (The Future of Ultrasound: Color Photos and 4D Imagery, 2014, p.1). It is different than x-rays because it doesn’t use radiation, “Ultrasound comes from a machine that creates an image of the inside of your body. It shows what your baby looks like while still inside your womb” (Ultrasound in Pregnancy, 2016, p.1).…

She was concerned about the weight drop on twin A; hence, specifically the small head measurements. I explained to her that twin A is overall somewhat smaller than twin B and that the small head measurements were likely to be a reflection of a smaller baby. We did discuss other random possibilities in terms of infections and genetic problems but these would be unlikely given no other abnormal findings. Perhaps more likely would be the fact that there could be unequal placental sharing and perhaps twin A has less share than twin B and we will need to continue to follow for signs of placental insufficiency, We also discussed her cervical length evaluation and we will need to obtain a transvaginal cervical length at next week’s visit. Finally, perhaps more concerning on today’s scan is the development of polyhydramnios on twin B with an MVP over 8 cm.…

The ultrasound checks to see if extra fluid is behind the baby's neck. Extra fluid around the neck could suggest chromosomal abnormalities. If the screening tests show anything abnormal, diagnostic testing will be the next step to further evaluate the screening results. Ultrasound Technicians, also known as diagnostic medical sonographers, use equipment that makes sound waves to produce or record a picture of the internal organs. Sonography is an important medical field because it allows technicians and physicians to see and diagnose a patient’s condition in a minimally intrusive way. What once may have required exploratory surgery now is a quick outpatient procedure with minimal patient discomfort. Ultrasound works by using a high rate of sound waves and echoes: it’s like echolocation which some animals use to find objects by sound. An Ultrasound machine uses high rythm sound waves that pulses into the body by using a transducer probe (the main part of the machine).…
