There are 5 general methods used for job analysis, each having advantages and disadvantages. This will be outlined below:

Site Observations
Advantages of observing employees at work is as follows: it allows the analyst to pinpoint exact detail about the timing, frequency and density of various tasks and duties; collect information about workflow, production efficiencies, work conditions, materials and equipment used and evaluate the actual physical tasks that the job comprises of. Observing employees also minimises job incumbents being bias and misleading, embellishing or overlooking important aspects of the job.
Disadvantages are that site observation can only be used in jobs that are easily measurable and some employees may dislike

An advantage is that interviews offer the opportunity to enquire and illuminate areas of misperception about complex portions of the job. The interview can capture the uniqueness and complexity of some jobs better than standardised methods.
A main disadvantage is that the analyst must spend a great deal of time with each employee, and some employees may not respond to questions prudently as they might feel intimidated during the interview. Also to match data from different interviews can be difficult and even organized interviews result in a lack of uniform information especially when there is more than one analyst.

Diaries
Job incumbents will keep a diary of their work activities during an entire work cycle, employees will complete information at certain times of the work shift and maintain the diary for 2-4 weeks. The advantages are cost-effectiveness, comprehensiveness regarding duties performed and time spent on each duty as well as a feeling of personal gratification.
The disadvantages are that employees require and will take time to complete them or they might be unwilling or unable to complete them. Employees could also be prejudiced regarding their duties and add more tasks to the job.

If a company neglects the effects of the external environment there could be detrimental consequences, in order to properly plan and combat the effects the company needs to do environmental scanning. Environmental scanning identifies opportunities or threats to the company in the external environment and allows the company to better plan and control their future workforce management techniques.

Question 7.1
Yes the EE Act does make provision for fair discrimination. The EE Act states that one can discriminate if it is part of an affirmative action programme; in line with the Act; or is an integral condition of the job. An example of fair discrimination is a training programme designed to advance Black women in the workplace.

Employers may not discriminate on the grounds of race, gender, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital status, family responsibility, ethnic or social origin, colour, age, disability, religious belief, political opinion, language or HIV status.
