Introduction
The general idea of this work is to explore the role of dubbing as a method of the audiovisual translation and how it is performed in superhero movies produced by Marvel Studios. Dubbed movies have become popular among young audiences, for example, the ‘Shrek’ series, as well as in many European countries where movies or TV series are dubbed even for an older audience. The superhero genre has joined this trend, for example, in Poland every superhero movie has its dubbed version since it reaches a wider audience than subtitling. A good dubbed movie requires many factors which must be executed perfectly, especially in superhero movies, where some of the characters wear masks. This fact may cause problems to people responsible for developing dubbing in terms of lip-synchronization, an adequate number of syllables and deciding whether some elements of original text should be omitted or not. This diploma work will try to establish whether ‘masked’ speech is more reliably developed in dubbing movies than ‘unmasked.’

Dubbing, opposed to subtitling, does not require a visual focus on translation. This fact makes watching a movie easier since a viewer can focus on what is happening on the screen and hearing actors’ speech instead of dividing attention into reading and listening at the same time (Goris 1993). Dubbing is especially friendly for children, and for people with some kind of disability. It is also more flexible, which means that dubbing allows to include more information in a target text and recreate dynamics of the original dialogue (Mona Baker).
