Motivation is defined as the factor that causes people to act and behave in a certain way. This is the willingness for people to work hard (F.O'Sullivan, 2011).
According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs a lot of people are motivated by a yearning to satisfy a group of needs. There are five groups. Which are Self – Actualisation Needs, Esteem Needs, Social Needs, Social Needs, Safety Needs and Physiological Needs (F.O'Sullivan, 2011).
Psychologist Frederick Herzberg proposed the two – factor theory – also called motivation-hygiene theory. Believing than an individual’s relation to work is basic and that one’s attitude toward work can very well determine success or failure in life (Robbins, 2009).
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is based on a series of needs that range from basis of natural needs for sustenance and security to reach higher – order needs, such as self – esteem and the need for self – actualisation, these are to seek and to explain different types and levels of motivation that are very important to individuals at particular times in their lives (Siobhan Tiernan, 2001, p. 264).

Therefore, activities that demand the organisationally popular dimension of teamwork, creativity, innovation or knowledge enhancement will not be relevant or important to people who don’t earn enough money to survive, or who are not sufficiently protected from danger in their workplace. According to Maslow’s hierarchy theory, people with low – paid work or who face hazardous or dangerous environments in the workplace will be less interested in developing social networks, achieving higher statuses in their jobs or reaching their full potential in other ways (Siobhan Tiernan, 2001, p.
