Advancing Instruction: A Tale of Two Teachers
Freshman students have an HP Stream of their own, which they pay for over four years through textbook fees. The Learning Management System, Schoology, and Office 365 have been promoted by the technology director through various PD opportunities taking place within the different schools.
Interviews with two 9th grade teachers (See Table 1) reveals the dichotomy between equity, clearly meaning access to the device as a learning tool resulting in equitable learning experiences, lesson planning with Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge in mind, and expectations for students.
Teacher two demonstrates an understanding of what the National Education Technology Plan (2016) refers to as non-cognitive

Right now, it may be that most of our staff is at the Substitution or Augmentation level of use. While professional development is necessary to move teachers toward more creative and innovative uses of the ubiquitous devices, it seems that the Telephone Game is an apt model for how technology innovation spreads in our corporation. One person tries something new and is excited by the results. She tells other teachers about her success. One of these teachers is ready to try something new, to move to the next stage on the SAMR model, so tries something similar in his own content-area. He, too, is enthusiastic about the results and shares his experience with others. Soon, another teacher is ready to take the plunge and tries something similar in her class...People hear the message and take what they want from it, trying what they want to in their own classes. This is free, point-of-need professional development by peers, for peers. In the Tale of Two Teachers, the hope is Teacher B will talk about his lessons and use of technology with other teachers like Teacher A, and these teachers will become interested in working in the technology into their lessons. Teacher A will likely provide informal professional development about how …show more content…
Yet I have learned from the course readings that access to the hardware and fast Internet access will not by themselves help increase student learning. Students will need their teachers to create lesson plans that require them to use technology for ______________ in order for student learning to increase. Unfortunately, Teacher B in my Tale of Two Teachers requires only his high ability and AP students to use their laptops for inquiry and project-based learning. He talked about the importance of 21st Century learning and stated the requirements for his students: Regular will be asked to peer evaluate the projects’ use of images, font, color, and placement of images and texts while his honor and AP students will evaluate their peers’ presentation of content, looking for accuracy and depth of information presented. So within this teacher’s own schedule, he has two curriculums: one asks students to do rote, DOK Levels 1 & 2 learning while the other requires students to do higher order thinking, DOK Levels 3 & 4 learning. This is something I have worried about and called attention to during the past two years I have been an instructional

Student A from the morning class has a learning disability that prevents him from focusing and becomes easily frustrated. During one on one instruction, I would repeat the directions and sometimes the child will have moments, For example, there was an ant on his backpack, and he began to scream and run while most students will stomp on the bug. Student A made progress but will benefit from special education because the student will receive more attention compared to a regular classroom. Regular classes are unable to provide that one on one instruction and teachers may not be adequately trained to teach children with a learning disability. (Spring, 2014, pg. 126)…

The article explores a study conducted to see what teachers choose to do to conduct their classes when they have no restrictions and limits, specifically in terms of technology. The study showed that despite the freedom to choose the tool of choice, teachers stuck with power points, which are the most basic “old school” way of teaching a class. Savasci concludes after the study that teachers must increase their “ knowledge and skills about how to use those instructional technologies and help them develop positive attitudes toward information and communication technologies”. This illustrates Cahn and Cahn’s sub-claim that schools and their teachers should branch out to innovative technologies for their students. The intended audience seems to be the generation older than the millennials given the subject and context of the study is very factual, but can definitely be intended for millennials as well because the language used is not difficult relative to other academic studies conducted.…

“Computers, when used for the right purposes, can make a big difference” (Kleinman). Kayla Delzer, a teacher from West Fargo, has been, what she calls, “reinventing her classroom”. Her design allows students to be the leaders while she is the learner. She says “ When the students are in control of their learning, it makes it very relevant to them. Embrace their knowledge and they will embrace their learning”.…

In this article, a key idea that I read about was how integrating technology into the classroom is sometimes put on pause because of the teacher’s knowledge and experience with technology, pedagogy, and content (TPAC). The world is constantly changing and that is including technology. It is a teacher’s responsibility to change and grow with these changes that can be so important to student’s lives and help them to better their future and education. Technology is a complicated thing, but integrating it into the classroom betters the students because they are learning in a more fun and engaging way, rather than reading word-for-word from a textbook. Integrating technology into the classroom could start at watching a simple video clip about a topic or go all the way to doing a whole unit straight from computers and tablets.…

As teachers we have to equip our students to live in this kind of world. According to Sousa, “…children who spend their early years in front of screens will eventually have adult brains that are hardwired to process information at a frantic pace” (Sousa, 679). Technology has many positive aspects, but often gets a bad rap. According to Wedlock & Growe, “The problem is that technological innovations need to be transformed from tools of obsession into tools of education”…

The continuous evolution of technology is leaving behind an impact in the lives of humans around the world, with the introduction of computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets over the years. However, with this evolution of technology, there is a significant number of pros and cons that define how far technology is impacting everyone involved, and this especially goes for students. Now, if anyone is wondering what that last sentence means, it is best to take a flashback in time and learn more about the origin of the issues of students and technology. Three years ago in June 2013, the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, introduced what is called the ConnectED initiative for students and teachers across the U.S. The idea behind…

In the third phase, I would construct my training materials, and engage in teacher pre-training if necessary. Typically, I would construct a presentation that could be screen cast to remote users via (Zoom, or WebEx) that also allowed for direct participant collaboration, questions, and interaction. If the function was not embedded with the presentation software, i.e. Zoom, I would run a compliment channel via Slack for user interaction. Inherent within this third phase, I would take my participant data and conduct the professional development session on a day, and time that allowed for maximum attendance, and staff participation. I would also follow-up with teachers to encourage attendance, in extolling the fact that the professional development session will be purposeful, and directly…

During my observation, I was guest to the classroom of Mrs. Peryn, a fourth grade teacher at Cler-Mont elementary school in the Fort Osage R-1 district. Mrs. Peryn is a veteran teacher, with more than a dozen years of experience with students. Where she remembers a projector and overhead, is now a SMART board flanked by a pair of spare chargers for student Chromebooks. Even with the implementation and ready interactions with technology, the inside (and outside) walls of her classroom are covered with colorful billboard backgrounds laced with one-page essays, friendly letters, and pictures of their latest craft project. Towards the back of the room is a small table -- separate from the rows of student desks -- with a nearby “library” bookshelf of the latest…

Technology has experienced a tremendous breakthrough over the past few years, and many schools have decided to integrate iPads and laptops into their school curriculum. Despite the controversy over the benefits of tablets in the classroom, technology has proven to have many advantages for both students and teachers. Technology allows children with disabilities to connect with classmates and teachers and learn more quickly. Furthermore, students need to have a basic understanding of technology before entering the real world, where it is growing rapidly. Also, iPads and laptops allows students to think outside the box and expand their horizons, and finally, not only can students increase their knowledge and potential with technology, but the…

As the human race continues to evolve in a variety of ways, some may want things to stay a certain way. The older generation of people were raised in different ways and like to continue the rest of their life as it is. Teachers in today 's generation were taught with older methods that include using pencils, papers, and chalkboards, rather than technology. They have not been exposed to the technology that has advanced since they have been taught and since getting their teaching certificates. The new and upcoming teachers in this generation are being taught differently and more advanced.…
