Adrian Alphona's Runaways: Pride And Joy

Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona’s graphic novel Runaways: Pride and Joy is a short story that illustrates the importance of not only growing up and becoming independent, but also creating one’s own life path rather than following the one that one’s parents have forced upon him or her. By following a group of youths – Alex, Chase, Gert, Karolina, Molly, and Nico – that unite to fight against their supervillain parents, Vaughan and Alphona demonstrate that, while a child is genetically predisposed to have characteristics, or “superpowers”, either identical to or similar to those of his or her parents, he or she need not use them in the same way as his or her parents. In the present-day city of Los Angeles, Alex, Chase, Gert, Karolina, Molly,

Wendelin Van Draanen has a great deal of entertainment in Runaway. Not all of it is humor, necessarily. There are lots of parts when Holly feels bitter, heartbroken, and melancholy. She breaks down when someone mentions about her parents, or even think about them, especially her mom. She hardly remembers anything about her father (because she was young when her father was alive), but a handful of memories about her mom.…

This Summer, I decided to read the The Color Purple by Alice Walker, a novel about the life of African-American woman in a post-slavery society based in the South, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, a book about a socially isolated high-schooler who tries to navigate through life by experiencing different emotions with a new set of friends. When choosing from an array of book collections, it definitely took me some time to pick two to read. The criteria that these books had met was that they had to be works that I could relate to and had to have merit. So, the reason why I chose The Color Purple is because it is a critically acclaimed piece of literature, and it is potent within the Black community, and I felt like it resonates with our time frame. And, the reason why I chose The Perks of Being a Wallflower is due to my love coming-of age books that take place in a high school setting.…

In the novel, The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, all the storytelling done makes the plot structure very unique. The novel takes place in four different time frames: the mother’s childhoods in China; the young adult years of the mothers when they immigrate to America; the childhood years of the daughters in the United States; and the young adult years of the daughters as they interact with mothers. The mother’s childhood experiences take place in China while the rest of the context takes place in San Francisco or Oakland, California. The rising action has the reader wondering whether Jing-mei (one of the narrating daughters) is going to be able to explain their mother's life story to her half-sisters whom she recently found out about. The climax…

The Joy Luck Club is not only the title of an amazing novel and now a movie; it is also the name of the weekly gathering that four Chinese women have participated in for many, many years. The movie The Joy Luck Club opens after the death of Suyuan Woo, the founding member of the Joy Luck Club. Suyuan passed away without fulfilling “an important thing on her mind” (Tan, 1989 p. 38): to be reunited with her twin daughters who she had left while escaping from the war in China. The other three members of the club (An-Mei, Lindo, and Ying-Ying) tell this to Suyuan’s daughter, June, who has been asked to take her place at the Joy Luck Club meeting and play mah-jongg with them. After she learns her mother’s past, the other women reveal that her formally…

As a teen growing up through the 21st century, I’ve come face to face with many depths of overcoming dissociation, inaccurate accusations, and unsteady decision makings. Everyday I see my peers change their lives substantially for incomprehensible reasons, based solely on their ambitionist drives. I sense the radiance of their beings, but am forced to watch them dwindle down into nothing more than a match spark that is trying to drown itself out in gasoline. Through my small town of Excelsior Springs, I find myself in the dead core of every disastrous youth verdict. Proven not to be merely me that is located center of the mayhem, A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare and the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling likewise linchpins…

It is often regarded by scientists that someone’s personality is determined by their DNA. In those strands that state the color of someone’s hair and eyes, also decides whether or not a person is pre-genetically disposed to being “successful.” However, I have a vivid memory of where I became aware of the word “success,” although at the time, I probably only found the definition intriguing. The story was titled The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart and it was though this story of four special children sent on a mission by a narcoleptic named Nicholas Benedict that I became aware of my own powers and weaknesses. Not only I had found the book fascinating, but it lead me to take charge of my own evil villain and come out strong.…

Margaret Atwood’s “Happy Endings” is a type of work called metafiction. What is metafiction? Metafiction is fiction in which the author self-consciously alludes to the artificiality or literariness of a work by parodying or departing from novelistic conventions (especially naturalism) and traditional narrative techniques. Happy Endings is a story with seven different parts and all parts have their own story to go with. Viewers and readers tend to be attracted to a particular genre of film or text. The root cause for having an admiration towards one genre but not the other is because we like works that remind us of the things that we like about ourselves. Essentially, we relate to a certain character in movies and literature hence why people write specific kinds of works. The beauty of short stories is that we do not pay attention to the plot because we cherish the feelings we get and the lessons learned from the story. In most fiction, narratives of short stories with the writer’s voice and opinion are not on the page.…
