An estimated 25% of adolescent students in the United States suffer from a mental disorder, according to Korrie Allen a researcher at Eastern Virginia Medical School in the Department of Pediatrics (Allen, 2011)\. Mental health struggles are more prominent than most people think. It is important for these students …show more content…
Michael Thomas McKay and Jon C. Cole also discovered when alcohol is used as a coping skill, such as a way to reduce tension, to escape from reality, to avoid unpleasant emotions, or to relieve stress common to students, it is typically associated with the heaviest adolescent drinkers and those who experience problematic depression (McKay, Cole, 2012). Because alcohol has the ability to diminish awareness and it can make things easy to forget, many adolescents go to it to help them cope with their struggles. The very addictive nature and negative health effects of alcohol is what makes it so easy to abuse. To continue, adolescents who reported finding home life, attendance at school and financial pressure more stressful were more likely to drink problematically and those who drink often, tend to perform worse than their sober counterparts (McKay, Cole, 2012). Those who have struggles that they find hard to cope with, often turn to alcohol as an escape. Unfortunately, alcohol is very addictive and leads to poor school performance. Alcohol can decrease their motivation which can impact a student’s performance. Korrie Allen also found adolescents who are depressed or have an anxiety disorder are at high-risk of suicidal ideation and/or actions. The World Health Organization indicates that suicide causes more deaths per year than homicide or war (Allen, 2011). If mental health issues are not addressed, they may lead to suicidal ideation and behaviors. Suicide is more common than most believe, therefore, it is an issue that must be addressed to save those who consider taking their own life. According to Korrie Allen, when an adolescent student is struggling with anxiety or depression and it is affecting their school performance, school-based interventions provide a naturalistic setting to practice new thoughts and evaluate
