Adler's Essay 'Possess The Beauty'

Improved Essays
Adler has well deserved and noted credibility in his essay about how to mark a book. His wording is very precise and to the point, yet easy to understand. Bringing in phrases such as: ‘false reverence for the paper’(p1), ‘possess the beauty’(p1), ‘staking and claim’(p1), and ‘fancy thinking’(p3), work at the audience in the way that brings them around to the idea that marking a book is a good thing, instead of a bad thing. He also talks about ‘the world’s greatest books’ can be obtained ‘at less than a dollar’ (p1). Knights of Spain, Warriors of the Sun is written by Charles Hudson, and is about the expedition that Hernando De Soto explored through the Southeast of America between 1539 and 1542 in search of gold, treasure, fame and power. This book accounts for the native societies, that were visited by De Soto and the thousands of miles that were traveled. Charles Hudson combines the study of the physical remains of ancient cultures, history, and geography to propose an explanation to the question, “Where did De Soto go?” Throughout my reading, I got the idea that Hudson’s aim for his book was to be not only be scholarly but also enjoyable.…

Margot “…said nothing”, “…stood alone”, “…did not move”, “…did not follow”, and kept “…quietly apart”. This shows us that there is an absence of movement and sound around Margot and where the rest of the children are loud, restless and moving constantly Margot does the opposite to all of them by saying nothing and standing still and away from everyone from everyone else. Margot is different from the children in her stillness and isolation and Ray Bradbury has shown this to us by creating a contrast in her description by using the absence of sensory imagery to show us stillness and isolation whereas he explained fully all the sensory imagery when describing the rest of the children as moving constantly and keeping…

“Always Something More Beautiful” by Stephen Dunn talks about how something beautiful relates to taking yourself seriously and staying on course, no matter the outcome. I chose to capture the line in which Stephen Dunn writes, “[W]ith my best running shoes, and pure speed.” In the picture, I am wearing my own running shoes to represent “the best running shoes.” I am in a running stance to represent the starting place. I wrote the line of the poem on a piece of paper to tape to my shoes to represent that the running shoes and the idea of beautiful are connected.…

“The line is, you’re not black enough,” exclaims the literary agent, Yul, to the main character and protagonist, Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Everett 43). Monk is reeling as he learns the latest of his novels is amongst a stack of recent rejections. This proclamation marks the writer's seventeenth rejection by publishing companies. Monk is a novelist and professor of English literature, much like his creator, the author, poet, and novelist Percival Everett. Monk prides his literary writings of rather obscure papers and does not see them, nor any of his works, as works of color.…

This essay will summarize Susan Sontag’s ideas concerning how beauty is seen in today’s modern culture and the consequences that these views have toward women, by using Susan Sontag’s vivid examples and definitions found in both “A Woman’s Beauty: Put-Down or Power Source” and “An Argument About Beauty”. Next, I will argue in support of most of her key points; however, I will also argue against some of the points presented in the essay. For example, I agree with her assertion that in todays modern culture women’s beauty is seen as parts and not as a whole and the effects of this distorted perspective. However, I disagree with her on how she believes that things will get better and how she blames Christianity for fostering one of the distorted perspectives of women’s beauty. Susan Sontag brings about a lot of key points that we as Christians should understand so as to bring about a better attitude and view towards women and beauty.…

Throughout his essay he states that reproduction has belittled the original, and has made images of art valueless. On the contrary, I believe that the reproduction of art has generated countless benefits for the art community, such as knowledge, popularity, and value.…
