The author teaches us through the brutal punishments and beatings that we should never take things for granted, including our loved ones. Adeline thought, “ I hardly knew why I was crying. For the last few months, I had taken the blows as they came, with stoical fortitude. The pain of being torn from my aunt; the anxiety of seeing all my schoolmates disappear from St. Joseph's; the perception of being abandoned and forgotten; the fear of being imprisoned by the Communists; the knowledge of my teachers own terror and helplessness” (Mah 124). Adeline has been through so much and still manages. This quote is important because it shows us how much others go through. Adeline lives her life in sadness and fear and still gets through each day. People are unhappy even when they have all their necessary needs. Adeline is missing the most important need, love. Father asks Adeline, “ The stewardess asked me to fill out these cards. I'm afraid I've forgotten your Chinese name. Is it Jun-qing” (Mah 137). Father not knowing Adeline's name is a sign of carelessness and unwantedness.
