Adele is actually the foil to Edna, but isn't that the way a “real” friendship works? Adele was a woman who stayed at home and cared for her family, which happened to be the center of her life. Even though she stayed busy, Adele always made time to sit with Edna and talk through life's troubles. In the novel I recall Edna and Adele walking down to the beach while on vacation at Grand Isle, and discuss Edna’s inner confusion relating to her husband. Adele listened and in return provided levelheaded feedback to Edna. Adele kept the storyline going by not allowing Edna to just ignore the feelings, but rather learn to cope with them in a respectable manner.

Adele tried to lead Edna to the light, but soon realizes Edna has gone too far. Adele was pregnant with her fourth child once they arrived home. The night Adele was to give birth she called upon Edna to come over. Even though Edna was no help Adele knew it could be a pivotal teaching moment to allow enough to realize one thing. Adele told Edna to always remember her children. Adele truly cared for Edna, but knew there is no way to help her anymore. Adele tried to provide a last bit of hope to keep Edna from making a stupid decision
Without Adele, Edna and the novel itself would've taken many different turns of events. Adele kept a modest level of sanity to both Edna and the reader.
