The diagnosis of acute lymphoid leukemia requires several tests, because the symptoms is not enough and they are similar to other disease too. It begins with complete blood count (CBC) test which provides the values of blood components. Normal children leukocyte average is 5,000-10,000 mm3, while red blood cells average is 3.8-6.0 x 1012/L, and Hemoglobin level is 95-205 g/L. The test measure also Hematocrit, and platelets. For acute lymphoid leukemia patients, the results change. The red blood cells, hemoglobin levels, hematocrit, and platelets show significant decrease. In contrast, the leukocytes count show abnormal diminution. The follow up procedures are Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. The bone marrow has fluid portion and solid portion. …show more content…
The procedures commonly preformed in the iliac crest for safety reasons. It begins with the patient placed in the lateral decubitus position and exposing only the site to be sampled. The doctor starts to antiseptic and scrub the site. After that, a local anesthetic is infiltrated to the skin and the underlying tissue. The adequacy of the anesthetic is tasted by gently pressing to the site with the tip of the needle and questioning the patient for any pain. Next, a skin incision is made with surgical blade where a hollow needle with lock is inserted into the bone. Once the needle reach inside, it’s advanced by slowly rotating clockwise and counterclockwise until the the needle is entered to the marrow cavity. Finally, the doctor starts to withdraw the fluid approximately 0.3 mL of bone marrow. The second step is the bone marrow biopsy, and it’s done to the solid portion of the bone marrow. The persuader preparation is the same as the aspiration’s preparation. The different is using a larger trephine needle to insert and attach the bone
