Leukemia is a disease that is commonly treated by using chemotherapy and with this treatment comes a lot of side effects like myelosuppression (Thompson 2000). Patient that get Myelosuppression are sometimes diagnosed with anemia which is a disease that results from low level of oxygenated red blood cells and thrombocytopenia which is a decrease in the amount of platelets that a patients has (Thompson 2000). Leukemia affects the cardiovascular system by forcing the clotting cascade to start and also activating accelerated fibrinolysis which leads to bleeding in the mucous membranes (Thompson 2000). Since leukemia is characterized with its proliferation of white blood cells, when this white blood cells start to divide in about 50000 to 100000 cells per minute it can lead to capillary plugging and the stoppage of microcirculation (Thompson 2000). …show more content…
For Acute lymphoblastic leukemia Patients go through chemotherapy with chemotherapy drugs like, daunorubicin and prednisone. After the treatments eighty percent of the patients are often in remission, and fifty percent of those patients often relapse (Mckenna 2000). Chemotheraphy is the most common treatment when it comes to chronic leukemia, other treatments include preblast phase and oral hydroxyurea while chronic lymphoblastic leukemia depends on the stage the cancer is on, it might require no treatment or it might need palliative care(Mckenna 2000).
