Acute Bronchitis

Acute bronchitis is the sudden development of inflammation of the trachea and major bronchi. It is caused by mainly by viral and sometimes bacterial infection. However, inhaling substances that irritate the lungs, such as tobacco smoke, and dust can cause it. The main symptoms for a 55-year old include a hacking cough that last for up to three weeks with or without phlegm, and sometimes dyspnea and wheezing. The typical community acquired pathogens (CAP) involved with acute bronchitis are viruses which include influenza A and B viruses, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), coronavirus, and adenovirus (Buttaro, Trybulski, Bailey, & Sandberg-Cook, 2013).

The development of chronic cough due to reactive airway disease with acute bronchitis can cause discomfort and sleep loss. More so, the person become vulnerable to superinfection, hence, develops activity intolerance and hypoxia. Pneumonia on the other hand can cause dyspnea, chest pain, and anxiety. Though not common, acute respiratory failure and sepsis may happen (Buttaro et al., 2013). The American Lung Association, ALA (2015) indicates that, during treatment of acute bronchitis, if the causative organism is viral, the patient is recommended to take enough rest, drink plenty of fluids, and can take a cough suppressant and a pain reliever. Sometimes steam or humidifier may be encouraged. If caused by bacteria, antibiotics are prescribed, however, in most cases acute bronchitis go away on its own. With pneumonia, the treatment is determined by the type of pneumonia, severity of the symptoms, age, and the patient overall health. Viral pneumonia is treated with rest, fluids, antivirals, oxygen and breathing treatments where necessary. Bacterial pneumonia requires antibiotics depending on the specific causative pathogen (ALA, …show more content…

Beat of Another Drum Mr. Rembert is a 65- year old African American male that was transported by ambulance to this Las Vegas, Nevada long term acute care facility. The patient has a substantial history of cardiopulmonary difficulties with a chronic cough and has been diagnosed with COPD (a grouping of both chronic bronchitis and emphysema); Emphysema is injury to the alveoli which are the tiny sacs in the lungs that permit oxygen and carbon dioxide to interchange between the blood stream. This produces huge air spaces that are distributed throughout both of the lungs. This occurs without fibrosis (scarring) and causes the lungs to be hyper inflated (over distended). Chronic bronchitis is chronic inflammation of the bronchial walls; this irritation will cause the size of the mucous glands to increase in magnitude and production.…

Concerning the bronchiectasis, I have reassured Janice that the recent blood tests do not suggest allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and at this stage, no specific intervention is required. If Janice does develop an infection, she will likely require an extended course of oral antibiotics. It would be useful to obtain a sputum sample for culture and treat her with Bisolvon. At this stage chest physiotherapy for sputum clearance training is not required, but if her symptoms become more persistent over time, this would need to be considered. It would also be important for Janice to have the flu vaccine…

In fact, pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinus infections are the most commonly reported influenza complications (CDC, 2015). In healthy populations, influenza usually runs its course in less than two weeks. In populations such as the elderly, those with compromised immune systems, children, and those with lung disease or other chronic medical issues, influenza can develop into deadly complications, such as pneumonia. Important signs and symptoms to be aware of are related to these complications such as: difficulty breathing, wheezing, tachypnea, worsening fever, worsening myalgias or malaise, chest pain, hemoptysis, dizziness, confusion, and uncontrollable nausea and vomiting. Patients should be educated to seek immediate medical care for possible change in treatment plan should they experience any of these symptoms (CDC,…

This algorithm is intended to deal with the microbiological aspects of hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia. The severity of the illness is important in determining when to collect the diagnostic samples and which antimicrobials to administer due to which organisms are present. There are many prognostic scoring systems used to suggest the severity of the disease in patients e.g., The Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System and the Mortality Predictor Model.…

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. It's caused by smoking cigarettes or long-term exposure to irritating gases or particulate matter. Your lungs are directly affected by COPD, because air travels down your trachea and into your lungs through the bronchi. The bronchi are divided into many smaller tubes or bronchioles that end in clusters of tiny air sacs called alveoli. Your lungs rely on the natural elasticity of the bronchioles and alveoli to force air out of your body.…
