2.1 Modes of learning
To facilitate active and independent learning I have used a range of learning modes that promote cooperative, participative and collaborative learning – simulation, role play. Learners simulate through role play in a commercial salon environment working in pairs during practical activities, this involves preparing for the treatments they plan to carry out. Preparation is the learners being able to set up their equipment and products needed successfully to be able to carry out the required treatment on their client, once the preparation is complete the learner will then carry out the treatment. The identified learning modes have a positive impact on learning as …show more content…
The room is designed to encourage a realistic role play environment, with adequate privacy given through well-spaced plinths and curtained sections, calming colours, dimmer switches and an integrated sound system. They also have access to up to date electrical equipment and products that they would find in a high street salon, again creating a real life environment. This helps to motivate and engage the learner, as they feel professional and take on responsibility of running and keeping their area tidy and ready for clients. The learners can then simulate a therapist and client environment. Armitage et al (2007) state that we should pay attentions to heating, lighting and ventilation as students can become sluggish. I definitely agree with this and the impact on learning is greatly affected by this, as the salon has two showers and a sauna which can make the salon a very warm environment and if not managed properly by ventilating the area, it can indeed create a sluggish environment for the students, making their learning more …show more content…
We worked as a team going over assessment requirements. I was able to book classroom box of Ipads for this session from our Learning Resource Centre and we used them to research the theory required for their assessments. A positive outcome was achieved as the learners expressed that they had enjoyed being able to work more closely with each other, asking each other questions more easily due to closer proximity to each other. Also they felt the use of the Ipads helped them to feel comfortable more quickly when working with someone different, as it was a conversation starter and helped each other to use it correctly. This created a positive learning experience for everyone. I asked the learners to feedback their experience on a post it note and it was all mainly positive. One point that came across many times in their feedback was that they now felt more confident working with another peer in the group and would do this on a regular basis when taking part in practical elements of the course. The only negative was it was a tight space for note taking, as normally it would be two learners to a plinth. It has provided a next step for my future
