Outer Context Sociopolitical/Funding. Fortunately, the C-SSRS tool was implemented in several of the surrounding organizations in the community so the district did not allocate any money for staff trainings or other materials needed to implement tool. The school district was able to receive the necessary materials for the implementation process via mandated free training for the district’s student support staff. The student support staff then disseminated the information within the system. All additional materials were accessible on line via the Georgia Department of Education and Columbia University Medical Center Website. The structure for implementing the C-SSRS into the school setting was a seamless process as there was already a protocol for assessing for safety. For instance, the protocol for implementation did not change, however, the tool itself changed. The policy regarding assessing a student who is at risk is to contact the school counselor to assess the situation and if an assessment is needed the school counselor or administrator will contact the school social worker via cell phone. The school social worker along with the school counselor will assess student and follow the necessary steps of the tool. After assessment, a plan of action is executed contingent on the level of risk. A parent or caretaker is always notified no matter the risk level (e.g. low, medium or high risk.)
Priorities. It is priority that the student support department provide meetings several times throughout the school year to ensure all staff is aware of the protocol and policy regarding conducting risk assessments. It is communicated that only designated staff such as school social workers, school psychologist and/or counselors conduct risk assessments. The policy indicates two support staff members should be present to conduct assessment. The goal is to have only qualified staff conduct assessments to be able to provide support to the student, their family as well as school

The Rockdale County Public School System has always implemented a suicide risk assessment due to federal and state mandates. I have been employed in the system for ten years and I was able to witness the successful implementation and sustainment of the C-SSRS compared to other risk assessments. The implementation of the C-SSRS is fairly recent; however, due to the ease and usefulness of the tool it appears that this tool will remain in the system. Moreover, the C-SSRS is the “gold standard” tool with major of state and federal organizations as well. I suspect this tool will be a good fit until another evidence-based suicide tool is evaluated and
