Acting Role Model

Improved Essays
During the summer of 2016, I attended summer school for marching band. This event was not mandatory, since it was solely for the purpose of helping the incoming freshman, whom have no experience with music or marching. As one of many, I volunteered as a helper and as a veteran leader to facilitate the freshman to understand the techniques necessary to participate in marching band.Furthermore, I demonstrated how to be responsible by not missing practice days and informing the band director, a day before, if I was going to be absent. Acting as a role model will help ensure the new incoming freshman how to behave maturely, that hopefully will be effective in the future. Consequently, there was a time when my saxophone section was talking when

I believe myself to be outspoken enough to command band members to dress to one another, yet not too intimidating as to drain the fun out of the process. Since freshman year, I have improved upon my dressing to forms and getting to the right dot at the right time and having participated in theater has augmented my appreciation for correct spacing and saying true to the drill written in our drill books. I would love to see both underclassmen and upperclassmen improve upon their marching skills and ability to make forms and I would be honored to help them do so. As a brass captain, I feel as though I would benefit the band because I am enthusiastic and would encourage the brass put forth 100% effort toward every warm-up and play-through of the music. I would be sure to emphasize nuances of the music in rehearsal, such as dynamic changes and accent marks because I believe that a musical performance--no matter the ensemble--is not truly successful without genuine expression.…

As a musician, nothing terrifies you more than a botched performance. We spend weeks or months or sometimes even years working on a piece, only to get on stage and make a complete fool of ourselves. It is not that we lack the talent or passion for doing the music justice, but that simple, unmanageable factors make a huge impact when we have been stuck in the habit of using our typical environment to prepare for a performance. The smallest things can make the biggest difference- whether it be a different room, a different audience, or maybe even a different instrument altogether (which is very common as a percussionist, seeing as most of our instruments are much too large to transport everywhere we go). Nevertheless, an awful performance is…

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

I now had the title of section leader in the band, and was also an upperclassmen of the football team. It wasn’t exactly as easy as it seemed from those of the past. The sophomores thought they knew everything just because they had been there one year before, and the freshman thought they were hot shit for making it through middle school. It was painful to witness the underclassmen of football only squat halfway down, or the underclassmen of band march out of time, and have your advice go in one ear and right out the other. I decided that I needed some type of legitimacy as a leader.…

What are the stereotypes? “Hey Sami are you ready for some awesome roller coasters here at Six Flags?” Matt (trombone) says as I step off of the bus with my best friend Regan right on my heels. Before I am able to utter a syllable, Regan grabs my elbow and whispers, “Wait I thought we were going to ride everything in the park today.” Now granted I love my best friend, but she is not the best person to ride roller coasters with since she scares easily.…

    Marching Band Leadership

I rewarded the members who had shown the most dedication or improvement during a one week period of rehearsals with a bag containing goodies. This was a tradition for the marching band, one that the past leaders had neglected to follow. I felt that this tradition should not be pushed aside, especially since it helped to encourage success and effort. With this in mind, I gave the section what they wanted. All they looked for was someone to follow and trust.…

I have been enrolled in band for six years, up until my junior year of high school. The reason for myself leaving is that I wanted to focus on grades. I am an annual participant in the "Pedal for Pattison's" Fund Raiser. I was an IT assistant at my high school, and have aided in various tasks that included: Networking a new trailer, configuring switches, assisting teachers and students alike in their computer needs, and showing other upcoming technicians(students) the ropes.…

I’ve also spent many hours participating in concert band. The William Blount High School Band has not only helped me grow as a tuba player, but the band has also helped me grow as a person. I’ve learned how to interact better with people because of band; I’ve also learned how to be an effective leader by being in the William Blount High School Band. I joined the Chorus and the Vocal Ensemble at the high school and continued to try and better myself as a musician. My music department also offered me other musical opportunities such as festivals. I have attended several festivals such as the Lakes Region music festival and the All New England music festival. These festivals allowed me to come together with other students from different schools that loved singing and performing as much as I did. Every time I perform at one of these festivals I am overwhelmed by how beautiful music can be when everyone I am working with is just as passionate as I am about the work we are doing and also extremely talented.…

Between babysitting and my job at Toys R Us, I constantly find myself around children. As I’ve been told by teachers and band directors, I know I must act as an example so these kids strive for greatness. Rather than give into my inner demons and walk away from such opportunity, I give advice and direction to curious children who approach me. It’s a surreal moment when I tell children that although school isn’t the most pleasant or easy, it’s definitely worth all the stress and pain to be able to look back at end the school year and appreciate all of one’s accomplishments. I certainly remember this when I’m in marching band and find myself exhausted and struggling to stay motivated throughout the endless rehearsals.…

    Marching Band Reflection

To be in a marching band, one has to almost become one with the band. The instrument played is not a single aspect, but a part of a much larger whole that must be comfortable and confident together. When I first joined the band, I was not one of the more comfortable and confident people that fit in with everyone else. Most all band members are loud and proud of who they are, compared to myself, who always hid behind others and hated being the center of attention. However, almost everyone has that moment when they realize that everybody else is just as self conscious, just as scared, and just as awkward as they are.…
