No one knows exactly when Matilda was born, but it was at the earliest, towards the end of the year 1031. Her parents were the future Count Baldwin V of Flanders and Adela, Daughter of Robert II. Matilda is known to have two brothers but whether or not she had more siblings is unclear. She also may or may not be the youngest, but in that time period daughters were not as important as the sons and the daughters were always seen as secondary to the sons. Growing up, Matilda was praised for her ability to learn things so well, but it was all thanks to her mother, Adela. Matilda’s mother passed on a lot of her knowledge onto her. Matilda had learned the accomplishments to one day become a fitting bride for a ruler or a statesman, the art of embroidery and also may have practiced the harp and the viol. She was also taught how to manage households and estates, which was very important at the time when men were often gone for long periods of time. Her learning only grew from there. She soon learned how to present herself in public with a modest demeanor. She was very good at this, which she was praised for. As Matilda grew up, she had all possible virtues that she could have as a woman in her time, both in appearance and in character. This made her very desirable and …show more content…
Matilda in fact refused his proposal because she did not think she should have to lower herself and marry a bastard. This did not go well with William and not long after he caught Matilda leaving church one day and dragged her to the ground by her hair and beat her to death and then simply rode away.
