Accommodating for Rapid Population and Economic Growth in Texas
The state of Texas is experiencing a period of rapid population growth primarily in its major cities. As the population grows the state will need to implement policies and planning that will be able to accommodate this growth. In order to facilitate this growth the three branches of government will need to be able to cooperate with one another and make compromises for the greater good of Texas. In addition, each individual branch of government will need to play its role in creating a Texas that not only welcomes growth but also is prepared for growth. In the S.A. Growth: The Next Million article the author describes the importance of the legislature having to ability to get bills passed. In order for growth to be accommodated, many people will have to change their views or accept the changes that are on the horizon. Citizens of Texas must be willing to vote for bills that will not only encourage growth but also welcome it. The people of Texas need to be willing to “adopt new incentive policies that encourage development in areas where companies otherwise might be hesitant to invest, use bond money and allocate dollars in the upcoming fiscal budget for projects” as suggested in S.A. Growth: The Next Million (Davila). The legislative branch in Texas’ role first and foremost will need to be that of an advocate for the people, but also a mediator between the people and changes in policy to …show more content…
This preparation will come from the individual and collective efforts of the three branches of Texas government. Through the passage of policies that are geared towards planning the legislative branch will fulfill their role. The governor will need to appoint people that are responsible and qualified into state agency positions that will foster an environment ready for growth. The restructuring or expansion of the judicial branch will need to occur to accommodate the increase in population growth. Cooperation of all three branches will need to occur in order to enact all the changes and policies necessary to accommodate growth. Finally, the most challenging issue Texas will face is a shifting political atmosphere where a shift from an all red state to a more moderate state may occur over time. This sort of shift may hinder the ability of the government to function properly similar to how the national government remains at a near standstill due to
