Pecola is ‘lying on the kitchen floor’ in extreme ’pain’. This was a very disturbing experience for Pecola as she finds out she is pregnant with a baby of her father. This is an experience that changed Pecola’s life forever and having to deal with her father raping her. Through many years of abuse from her parents as a child, Pocola is destroyed mentally and physically. In God help the Child, Bride experiences abuse mentally. She is isolated and ignored by her mother growing up and wants to feel her touch: “I used to pray that [she] would slap my face or spank me just to feel her touch” (God Help the Child 31). Bride ‘pray[s] she would ‘slap [her] face’ just so she can feel her mother’s touch on her skin that she is desperate for since a baby. Among Bride getting a chance to feel her mother’s skin she paid a price of torture. Bride’s only way of getting her mother’s touch was to do something bad so she will hit her, but it did not work: “I made little mistakes deliberately, but she had ways to punish me without touching the skin she hated—bed without supper, lock me in my room—but her screaming was the worst” (31). Bride’s intention of getting in trouble did not go the way she wished. Instead of getting hit, Sweetness punishes her in a way ‘without touching [her] skin’. In The Bluest Eye the negative effect of racism has a strong impact on the person. As Pecola is walking home from school she sees kids from her school playing in the park she wants to play with them, but she is not allowed: “Black people [are] not allowed in the park” (The Bluest Eye 105). Pecola cannot do her hobbies because of the way her skin looks. Since she is ‘black’ she is ‘not allowed’ to play at all in the park. This impacts Pecola’s personality because she feels controlled of her skin colour. Also, Geraldine, a woman that lives near Pecola’s house kicks her out because of the way she looks and getting accused of something she did not do. Geraldine’s son Louis blames Pecola for harassing her
