“Prior to the 1800’s it was believed that people with disabilities were evil and possessed by the devil or were being punished for a prior sin” (History Perspective of Ableism in America – Ableism). With such little knowledge of what was wrong with the disabled, they would often times be left aside to die or be tortured and killed. The Chicago Municipal Code wrote, “no person who is diseased, maimed, mutilated or in any way deformed to be an unsightly or disgusting object or improper person to be allowed in or on the public ways or other public places in this city, or shall therein or thereon expose himself to public view. . . .” …show more content…
But, “In the mean- time disabled people will continue to seek refuge in separate spaces that are both the result of, and the escape from, ableism” Until ever person on the Earth realizes the damage done through ableism, many of those who are incapable will stay put and hide from the public because of the negative feedback they get from too many. Causing the United States to not be what our founding fathers once wanted, because of the unequal opportunities and discrimination handed out by so many Americans. Although our nation is recognizing the problem, ableism is still be found in everyday life; dating back to the 1800’s, through hate and acting against what our country believes in. Ableism is still a significant problem, as a nation we must strive to end
