As a law enforcement officer you will respond to different types of situations that will each require you to assist and react differently. Therefore, it is important to understand how to treat certain injuries because you will be the first responder on the scene. You’re main priority should always be your safety, because you can’t help the victim if you become the victim. Some medical emergencies that you can be the primary officer range from assisting in child birth, heat and cold injuries, patients who complain about abdominal pain, poisoning issues, and patient who may have a diabetes crisis.

Abdominal pain can indicate any kind of internal injury that can cause serious discomfort to even shock. Whenever I suffered from an abdominal pain my main motive was to get into a comfortable position to alieve the pain a little. Poisons are substances that may cause and allergic reaction, injury, and or death. Poisoning can occur differently and some examples are by ingestion, inhalation, injection, and or absorption. As an officer it is important to identify the symptoms and treat the injury appropriately. Poison from an insect sting causes anaphylaxis which is a severe allergic reaction in which the air passages swell and restricts breathing. An example of an insect that may cause anaphylaxis is the Africanized Honey Bees which are aggressive in nature. Africanized Honey Bees attack as a colony as one bee stings the victim that leaves a scent for the colony to trail. Anaphylaxis is life threating emergency and people who suffer from anaphylaxis carry a kit. Poisons from snake bites are most complex because they can affect the heart, kidney, and blood. Swelling, nausea, and one or two puncture wounds can indicate signs of a snake bite.
Officer encounter individuals who are intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. Drug overdose is type of poisoning by illegal drug or legal drugs. Always maintain proper officer safety when approaching a subject who may be under the influence of drugs.
