The last leaf is a short story written by O.Henry in 1907 and it was translated in Hindi as Aakhiri Patta by children’s fiction writer Arvind Gupta.The story is about two young artists Joanna and Sue who live together in Greenwich Village, New York City. Joanna was down with Pneumonia and in those days there was no cure for pneumonia and so while lying on her bed she used to stare at a tree which lost most of its leaves and made her mind that the day the last leaf falls, she will die.Meanwhile, her friend Sue was worried about her because Joanna had lost the hope of recovery completely and was discussing about Joanna with her neighbour, Behrman who was an old painter and adored both the girls. Have been translated in Hindi as—
“Yeh baat Mai ke mahine ki thi.November ki thand aate hi ek ajnabi bimari jise doctor pneumonia kehte hain ne basti ke kai logon ko apne barfile hathon se aa dabocha.”
In the first line there is Intervention as extra words have been added in Hindi-‘Yeh baat’ while no such words are present in the source language text.There is a visible reduction/omission as the words touching one here one there have been entirely ignored.Plus,there is a gender difference in the language as the disease in English has been referred to as ‘his’ while in Hindi the word bimari is assumed to be feminine.Thus,the shift here is Unbounded Category Shift as though there is sentence-sentence equivalence but it does seem to shift up and down the rank scale.
