There are four main components of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, which include the foundation, management, delivery, and accountability (ASCA, 2012). Through collaborative efforts, the foundation helps to build the focus of the school counseling program, identifies what students should gain because of the program, identifies what school counselors should be doing to support the program, and ethical considerations that create a program that will not cause harm to students (ASCA, 2012). The management component is crucial because it provides assessments and tools that help to provide continued development, implementation, and evaluation of the program as well as of the counselors (ASCA, 2012). This highlights the importance and effectiveness of using the ASCA National Model as a framework to provide counseling services to students. At my site they have adopted some principles of the ASCA National Model but not all. For instance, under the foundation area they have beliefs and program goals, they align the program with student competencies, and abide by ethical standards. In the area of management the counselors hold meetings to assess the programs strengths and areas for improvement, use data to support counseling services such as absentee rates and referral rates, and create calendars for yearly activities. In the area of delivery they provide direct and indirect student services such as individual student planning, individual and group counseling, consultation, and collaboration. In the area of accountability they have yearly school counselor performance appraisals. Some areas that are missing include a school counseling advisory committee, a vision and mission statement that is visible, use-of-time assessment, and a comprehensive proactive core …show more content…
First, as Evans, Zambrano, Cook, Moyer, and Duffey (2011) point out that counselors that understand culturally different world views can help them to provide appropriate interventions for culturally diverse students. In addition, Evans et al. (2011) discuss the importance of forming a collaborative relationship with parents to advocate for students. This is one way the program is providing responsive and equitable services because the school counselors often partner with parents to identify culturally appropriate strategies that may work best for certain students in counseling sessions in order to resolve academic, personal-social, and career or college
