I chose this one to talk about because on our first exam I missed the question that talked about competence because I did not know what it meant and ever since then I have seen it show up on multiple occasions in all of my classes so I felt it was important to look up and discuss. According to the ATRA website it states that competence is, “ the recreational therapist personnel have the responsibility to maintain and improve their knowledge related to the profession and demonstrate current, competent practice to persons served.” (Code of Ethics, 2009). It is also extremely important that recreational therapist maintain their credential. This really caught my attention because there were so many different models all of which seemed very similar to me. There is the medical model, community model, education model, international classification of functioning, recovery model, and inclusion. While some of these models might seem rather self-explanatory, there is quite a bit of information that goes along with each model that one, like myself, did not know. According to (WHP, 2015), the wellness & health promotion model comprehensively assesses key areas of health promotion, including how wellness programs are implemented in the workplace, how services such as coaching are provided to help participants develop skills to make healthy choices. This model is extremely important in the overall quality of one’s health. It is extremely important in this model that we focus more on the participant’s strengths and less on their weaknesses.
