APN Professional Development Plan
As advanced nurse practitioners it is important that a development plan is created which guides and records the activities undertook to meet the standards of practice. A Professional development plan provides a format for self-reflection on practice and for goal planning, capturing both the art and the science of advanced practice nursing. The plan is developed over time and monitors professional development. The portfolio demonstrates to the potential employer the knowledge, skills, and relevant experiences of the nurse when evaluating for career ladder promotions and new positions. These are Certified Nurse Practitioners (NP), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), and Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) and currently, there are 2253 APRNs practicing in SC (Andrews et al., 2015, p. 3). Education needed to obtain an advanced nursing practice degree involves graduating from an accredited nursing program with a master of doctorate degree. APN education programs include specialized clinical training and education in physical assessment, diagnosing, and prescribing therapeutic interventions including medication, therapies, and patient education for patients across the lifespan. Clinical practicum experiences total about 1000 hours that involve direct management of patients, including assessment, diagnosing, prescribing, and performing procedures (Andrews et al., 2015, p. 51). Licensure involves achieving and maintaining national certification as a Nurse Practitioner from American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). The South Carolina state board of nursing provides licensure for qualified registered nurses to work as advanced practice registered nurses. South Carolina is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact. The Compact offers practice privileges for registered nurses in all compact states. Responsibilities included bedside nursing, physical assessments, wound care, medication administration, admissions and discharges, rounding with physician, use of EMAR and EHR to enter and discontinue orders and FIM scoring.
