Characterization is the “ creation or construction of a fictional character”. Characterization is an important literary device that authors used to construct and highlight certain features. In the short story “A Worn Path” Eudora Welty uses the literary device of direct and indirect characterization to portray the character of aunt Phoenix. An early December morning phoenix Jackson is walking along a path through the Pinewoods. On Phoenix is an example of a perfect strong and independent character proven by use of characterization.
Eudora Opens her short story by using indirect characterization. Phoenix Jackson is “an old negro woman with her head tied in a red rag.” She’s walking down the pass in the early morning. “ Old phoenix said, ‘out of my way, all you foxes, owls, beetles, jack rabbits, coons and wild animals!” Indirect characterization is the “process by which the writer shows the character’s personality through speech, actions, and appearance.” Indirect characterization was used to show the reader, Aunt phoenix talking to the animals. He helped her up from her fall and proceeds to point a gun at her. “ doesn’t gun scare you? He said still pointing it. ‘No Sir, I seen Plenty go off closer by, in my day, and for less than what I done,She said, holding utterly still.” Instead of shaking with fear Phoenix is able to stand perfectly still and contain control of herself. At this point the reader questions how crazy aunt phoenix really is. Is she not scared of death? Or is she really crazy? On Phoenix seems to be a tough character who has been through a lot worse than having a gun pointed at her because she isn’t affected by this action. If she was crazy she wouldn’t have been able to keep her calm while having a gun pointed at her. This quote speaks for itself how many could stand at the other end of a gun and experience no fear like Aunt

Phoenix never gives up after been confronted with all kind of deterrents. On her way to the field, she thinks she sees a ghost, but after calling out to it and not receiving an answer, she “shut her eyes, reached out her hand, and touched a sleeve. She found a coat and inside that an emptiness, cold as ice” (Welty 650). Grendel Characterization Characterization is the action, used by authors, to describe the personality and qualities of someone, and is used in books, movies, plays, and other forms of literacy. Characterization can be one of two things: direct or indirect. These different characterizations are techniques used by authors to thoroughly develop and describe a character’s persona. In the story Beowulf, the author, who is unknown, vaguely describes the characters, but includes enough information to allow the readers to visualize the characters themselves.…

Although indirect characterization is important, direct characterization is important too. Direct characterization is when the author directly tells the reader about the character. It is often easier to understand traits when the author directly gives them. For example, “His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject, be it politics or love” (Steinbeck 33). When she finally finds the right building, she enters and the nurses ask her why she is there. Because of this, she forgot the reason as to why she needed to be there in the first place. One of the nurses recognize her and mention that she has been coming there for years to get her grandson medicine.…

By using characterization, it helps to show how people should try to see people for what they really are, and not what you want them to be by giving many sides to a character. By showing the different sides to the husband it shows how much the wife only saw him one way. Ergo, characterization helps develop the central idea, in the short story by Ursula Le Guin, by helping the reader further understand it, and gives the reader many examples of…
