A Certain Lady – Argumentative Essay When Dorothy Parker paints her lips red (3) during her poem A Certain Lady, she 's doing it because society expects her to - but this essay will argue that she 's also doing so out of paid obligation. At first glance, 'what goes on while (you 're) away / you 'll never know ' seems like unrequited love between friends, specifically the feelings that she has for him, but this is not the case. Certain lines in the poem discuss themes of emotional detachment, obligation and promiscuity – typical of what readers would expect of someone who lives a life of sexual debauchery. Analyzing this poem with these themes in mind, the poems ' main speaker can be easily understood as a woman who sleeps with men for money.…

At first, two characters of vastly different circumstances may appear to bear very few similarities. This is the case for Oskar’s grandmother in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and Cecilia of Yxta Maya Murray’s Locas. Oskar Schell’s grandmother grows up overseas in a rural area of Germany where kissing is scandalous and bomb threats are common. In contrast, Cecilia is raised across the ocean in Echo Park, California where the streets are unsafe and underage sex is commonplace. Upbringings set aside, their lives could not be more different.…

I am certain of the Ewells family members, Bob Ewell and Mayella Ewell lied for their own reasons. Bob lied about the court trial for three reasons, he is a racist towards the black community, and mad or angered that Tom is always helping out his daughter, and finally just to humiliate Tom in front of the whole town. I judge that Bob is racist towards Tom because of him having to live in a higher amount of poverty and filth than the black community. Reason number two is that Bob has a habit of making Mayella do all the choirs around the house. I instinct that when Tom helps her out, he gets guilt or less self-esteem when he sees a black man helping out his daughter.…

Yes, I believe that the author, Olive Ann Burns, has been successful with making Aunt Loma an unsympathetic character. I believe this because throughout the book she hasn't really cared about anyone else but herself, only doing things to please herself or to make someone else mad. The first example that had really popped out to me, is where she had walked in after will had gotten ran over by the train. “Aunt Loma looked furious. She didn’t so much as ask how I was feeling.…

Touching every American in one form or another, the dark, chilling shadow of slavery had long been cast upon the United States. Beginning with the early seventeenth century, the institution of slavery finally reached a tipping point in the second-half of the nineteenth century with the onset of the Civil War. This polarizing period in American history can be described as the South versus the North, slavery versus freedom, and brother versus brother. During and after the Civil War, newly freed Southern slaves began to rise up from those dark shadows of slavery to find an identity and purpose for themselves and their country that had for over two-hundred years been robbed of them by the status quo of oppression. Mary Louise Alcott’s short story,…

The great amount of respect and admiration a child has for their mother’s courage is abundantly evident throughout Edna St. Vincent Millay’s, “The Courage That My Mother Had.” Simultaneously, the poem conveys feelings of betrayal. Millay’s poem, through strong associations with equality as strong words, such as “rock” and “granite,” infers the general theme of the poem and the amount of titular courage the poem’s mother possessed. The narrator uses several different types of figurative language to create thoughts and emotions for the reader. Millay’s use of metaphors and clever word associations in her poem reveal to the reader the intricate emotional attachments of the child to her mother and the manner in which the child valued her mother.…

But as the story starts to close, the reader realizes that “Charles” is actually Laurie’s creative way to gain attention from his parents and a scapegoat to be rude and violent at school. Unfortunately, Laurie’s mom, who loves Laurie dearly, still believes “Charles” is a different student and refuses to believe that her own son could be as evil and vicious as the so called “Charles”. The short story is an example of the theme that love can cloud a person’s judgement because Laurie’s mom’s love for Laurie is preventing her from seeing the obvious. For instance, Laurie’s father asked what Charles’ other name was in order to try to trick Laurie into saying “Laurie” (which would be Charles’ other name because “Charles” is Laurie) and Laurie’s mother didn’t pick up on it. Clues to “Charles” secret identity appear several times, which leads the reader to realize who “Charles” really is, but not the mother.…
