A Trip To The Bahamas Narrative Essay

When I was eleven my family took a trip to the Bahamas. We departed DFW airport early in the morning, before even the birds had woken from their slumber. Our plane landed briefly at a small airport in southern Florida where we swiftly exited our large vessel for the cramped, musty quarters of a seemingly ancient aircraft. As the tiny metal bird descended from the skies a beautiful island emerged from the thick clouds. Our pilot landed roughly and sent us off to retrieve our luggage. We settled in quickly in our temporary tropical home and made our way to the beach. It was at this beach that my younger brother Carson and I decided to play catch with a small ball we had brought with us. We stood waist deep in water clear as glass and tossed this rubber sphere back and forth. From out of nowhere a Bahamian boy no older than nine years old appeared, and held his hands up wanting to play with us. He did not speak to us, he only played catch. We threw the ball with him for ten minutes and then he left just as quickly as he …show more content…
Dumas was surprised to find that she was nice, quite the opposite of the hardcore teachers she was used to in Iran. She compared the American classroom to a party, saying that the room was colorful and much more lighthearted than the learning environment she had in the past. While Dumas’ and my cultural outsider experiences are not the same, they share similarities. We both were shocked by the lifestyle in these new countries compared to what we had grown up with back at home. The biggest difference between our two stories is the fact that Dumas loved the American classroom. She enjoyed the new culture more than her own. I on the other hand was more fond of the American culture versus the Bahamian, preferring what I was used

Firoozeh Dumas tends to use many compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences in her work, as well as the odd simple sentence from time to time. An example of one of the compound-complex sentences in her work is when she states, “Until my first day at Leffingwell Elementary School, I had never thought of my mother as an embarrassment, but the sight of all the kids in the school staring at us before the bell rang was enough to make me pretend I didn’t know her.” This sentence, although long, allows the story to feel as though it is flowing…

Anna Maria Island is a special place to visit in Florida. This beautiful barrier island is located in Manatee County on Florida's west coast in the Gulf of Mexico. I've been there three times to stay at my Papa and Grandma's condo on family vacations, and I am fond of it there! When we visit, we see beautiful palm trees and nature, and we go to many wonderful places on the island. One place I really love is Fire and Stone Pizza!…

Initially, Spain and Portugal wanted to dominate the trading economy. When Columbus discovered the West Indies and Bahamas, a new world of opportunities was shown to Europeans. The Spanish arrived and immediately started to torture the Natives, purposely and accidentally. The Native Americans were not accustomed to the new settlers way of life, or the factors that they brought with them, such as disease. If a Spanish settler wanted to seize control over an Indian village he could easily do so without having to exert much force due to the fact that Europeans brought disease with them from the Old World.…

At the age of 21, having her first daughter, my mother did not have an education beyond the sixth grade. Three years later we were abandoned by my fleeing father to fend for ourselves in a small and rural community. Growing up on the small Caribbean island of St. Lucia, my mother struggled for many years to support her small family. Four years ago, we made our way to Florida, along with my younger sister, where we resided with friends. Although I graduated high school in St. Lucia, my mother did not have the finances to aid with my college expenses, thus she insisted that I again attend high school to provide her with ample time to obtain some form of income.…

We flew into mainland Haiti, but the village we go to, Sous A Philippe, is on a little island called La Gonave about 6 miles off of the mainland coast. So we took a 6 hour boat ride out on the bluest water I have ever seen. Arriving on the island was surreal. Seeing the village and the people for the first time was overwhelming. Growing up in Jamaica was not what some may think as ideal, it has been described as a Third World Country, but to me, it was just home. Third world indeed, poor, violent at times; a contradiction, with its sandy beaches, clear blue skies, delectable food, feel good music, and some of the hardest working people one can ever have the pleasure of meeting, who refused to stay where life may have placed them, but strived to climb above those circumstances and attempt to carve out a life for themselves and their children. Let me introduce you to the Jamaica that I grew up in and remembered; I remember the endless summer holidays growing up off the Sligoville Road, in a small district called Mt. Moreland, where the playground…

My first great experience on this trip took place on the plane. I was on a huge, triple isle plane when I flew to Chile. Based on my luck that day so far, I imagined a very large, smelly man would be sitting next to me. But a miracle must have happened. I saw a tall girl with brown hair and tan skin was walking down the aisle wearing a white marled Patagonia fleece.…

The Plane Ride When I was nine my family started a move from the tranquil suburbs of San Jose, California to the desert city of Windhoek, Namibia, located in southern Africa. My parents were taking myself, along with my younger sister and brother, around the globe because they felt a calling from God to be missionaries. All of our possessions were sold off, including my much beloved toys, until everything we had could fit into eight large suitcases. These suitcases are what we carried to the airport as we prepared for our journey. I felt no small amount of apprehension and excitement in what lay ahead of me in the new country, but an event I would experience in the coming flight would forever change and shape my perspective of how I see the…
