A Thousand Splendid Suns is a excellently written 2007 novel by Khaled Hosseini that keeps you turning the pages because of how incredibly difficult it is to put it down. The book tells a story about 2 young Afghan women; Mariam and Laila, that are very different yet share a lot in common, like the terrible pains and struggles they go through. The role of women in Afghanistan is simply unacceptable as they are constantly denied many human rights and freedoms. Khaled Hosseini may be a male, but that doesn’t stop him from doing an amazing job at portraying the gender roles and difficulties that women have in third world countries such as Afghanistan.
