Complying with the society in which they live, an author typically reflects cultural values through the heroes or protagonists. Whether a positive or negative attribute, these characteristics tell the reader about which qualities are regarded highly by that specific culture. Furthermore, the societies of the Middle Ages held elements of what came to be known as chivalry, land (which represented power), valor, and religion above all else. Ergo, Beowulf and Sir Gawain are each regarded as an accurate representation of the principles of Anglo-Saxon and Middle English cultures. 1) The opening scene with Ella reading a book while the rest of the actors sang and introduce the production depicts Ella as the main character who is level headed and a book worm. She is stuck in a town that worships Nevin Nallop, the creator of a pangram, and she seems to have outgrown the limited amount of opportunity that the island has to offer. The relationship between the townspeople and the LUGS are displayed by the LUGS assertive posture and gestures towards the residents, and their physical and verbal dominance shape their authority. For example, when Ruth was taken for saying illegal letters, her husband Shuburt tried to interfere but he was knocked to ground and was forced to cower from the LUGS. The contemporary reaction to Seamus Heaney’s translation of, and indeed all translations of, Beowulf reveals a fundamental shift in the understanding of what makes a hero, let alone an epic hero. Gone are the days of extolled honor, glory, and superhuman feats without acknowledged, human, flaws. Now an individual’s ability to accomplish such feats in conjunction with, and in spite of, their human imperfection is idealized as heroic. This modern view is in stark contrast to that of the ancient world. Assertions that in a “Heroic age,” such as that described in Beowulf or in the Homeric epics, there was little room for a hero to show humility as it would betray their human weaknesses would not be unheard of.…
