A Summary Of Genocide In Bosnia-Herzegovina

In 1991, Bosnia-Herzegovina had a population composed of three main ethnic groups: Bosniak, Serb, and Croat. As a whole, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s presence within the reformed Yugoslavia was peaceful and prosperous. When the republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence in 1992 the region quickly became a war zone. Bosnian Serbs launched a military campaign to eliminate the country of its Muslim civilian population. Which was supported by Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic who help push their campaign of ethnic cleansing by torture, confinement in camps, imprisonment, rape, murder, robbery, and forced displacement. As a result, an estimated 100,000 people were massacred and displaced more than two million. Maybe if they would of done something earlier, things wouldn't have escalated to the point where 100,000 people were murdered because of their religion. The United States should have learned from their mistake of not helping the jews during the Holocaust. History repeats itself so we need as people to stand up and stop them for continuing. I learned that everything makes a difference and also fight against the persecution of others no matter the cost because "Whoever Saves a Life Saves the World”. I think school system don’t spend enough time teaching about genocide. They do try but it's not enough we need more of an effort. For example, this year at Stoughton High school we started this new course “ Holocaust and the Resistance” which gives a further explaining of what occurred during the Holocaust with Hitler in power. I think it's really insightful to have a class like that and I feel that every student graduating from Stoughton High School should take this course especially with the issues that has been occurring this past
