Most people do not know how organ donation works and how big of an impact it makes, making people less likely to be a donor. UNOS is responsible for a lot relating to donation including: keeping track of the waiting list, matching a donor with a patient in need, releasing the organ to the patient 's doctor, educating the public, and so much more (Facts about Organ Donation). Donation works by signing up either at the DMV or on the UNOS website. Once you sign up you are a living donor meaning you can; donate blood every few months, donate one of your kidneys as long as you have one, and donating part of your liver. Live donors donations kidneys is rare because every one of us needs a kidney, but we all have two so we can sacrifice our extra one to someone who needs it. Live donor liver is more common, because the liver is the only organ that can regenerate itself. The opt-out law is, when someone is a donor unless they say they do not want to be before death. While the opt-in law is when people have to actively sign up to be a donor either online or with the DMV. Each of these has pros and cons. The biggest issue is that with either one, they will end up going against their own personal beliefs, either by being or not being a donor. Right now the U.S. has the opt-in system which is doing nothing to increase the amount of donations (Mclntosh). With the current system there are still so many people dying everyday. According to Medical News Daily, “Around 79 people receive organ transplants every day. Unfortunately, around 18 people die every day, unable to have surgery due to a shortage of donated organs”. Researchers from three different Universities in the UK analyzed the organ donation systems in 48 different countries for 13 years. There were 23 countries using the opt-in system and 25 using the opt-out system, they found “Opt-out systems also had the greater overall number of organ transplants” (Mclntosh). In this studied they also concluded that every country should follow Spain, who has the highest organ donation rate worldwide. In Spain they use the opt-out law, and have donation system that is both local and national and increase transportation of the organs.
