Something else that stood out to Jack was the idea that David made the abuse he encountered from mother a game or trying to survive also. He would not let her get the satisfaction of feeling like she won, instead of being concerned with the pain he was being put through. That even though the abused happened every night, David would still make up excuses as to why this was being done and yet he still would look for the good in mother when she pretended it was all over when the social worker was coming the next day.
