Similarities Between Araby And A & P

In most cases in literature the narrator tends to be the protagonist of the story, to which they essentially play an important role.This most often than not leads to an important lesson that brings the character to an epiphany, a sudden intuitive perception into reality of something initiated by a common occurrence or experience. He/she has to or have already gone through a quest that completely changes the protagonists perceptions to which in these stories creates a "hero". In the stories A&P and Araby both protagonist share similarities in experiencing an epiphany.

More specifically, in the story A&P the character known as Sammy, is a teenage cashier who works at a market named A&P. Sammy lives in a town known to be quite conservative

Being raised by his aunt and uncle and growing up in a small town in Dublin, the nameless boy begins to like his friends sister also known as, Manglas sister. His liking for her only grows stronger, to a point where he keeps very close eye and attention to her actions. For example he says, " I kept her brown figure always in my eye and, when we came near the point of at which our ways diverged, I quickened my pass and passed her". This lays out a visual on how he is so captivated by this women and goes out of his way to get her attention to which he fails. This contributes to his epiphany, the nameless boy and the women finally meet paths carrying a conversation about Araby. Araby being a charity case,she mentions she wants to attend but can't due to a retreat she will be going to. The narrator then sees this as a paved opportunity to finally impress this women and says, "If I go... I will bring you something". This is his "heroic" attempt towards her. In doing this the narrator finds himself in endless waiting for money from his uncle to which leads him to be late for Araby. Although he mentions he will bring her something, his plans take an unfortunate turn when he realizes he arrived late to the bazaar only to find tea cups and accents. Both protagonist trying to symblify a heroic example to the girls in the story fail to follow through and give up. In typical love stories there tends to be positive endings to which things run smoothly for the protagonist/ hero however in these two cases the final conclusion you could say is the opposite. Showing that love doesn't always lead to the stereotypical happy ever after we are quite used
