In the essay “Dawn’s Early Light” by Richard Rodriguez, the author demonstrates how the addition of immigrants has changed how Americans view themselves. Since the 20th century, the Mexicans were illegally employed in order to suit the American needs: crop harvesting and cheap laboring. The addition of Mexican immigrants also caused the assimilation of Spanish culture across the United States; that is Spanish being the unofficially, second language of the United States. Many have the belief that hope is beneficial. However, hope can be dangerous, for it can easily cloud your judgment. In “Doves on Wires,” by Joseph Kirman, a father is easily distracted from the dreadful circumstances of the Jews in World War II by the idea of hope. In “Street for Arrivals, Street for Departures,” by Charlotte Delbo, travelers during World War II focus only on how good their lives can be at their destinations, forgetting about the dangers of the death camps. Both authors use mood and action to suggest that hope -- particularly false hope -- distracts from fear.…
