In A Modest Proposal by Jonathon Swift he suggests the idea of selling babies and having them as a major dish. He says how this proposal would “lessen the number of papist” (Swift 7) and increase the value of marriage, because the man wouldn’t harm his wife if she were pregnant for fear of a miscarriage and not be able to sell the child. In this passage it is understood why Thomas C. Foster author of How to Read Literature like a Professor says, “not all eating that happens in literature is friendly” (Foster 15). In this “modest” proposal, Swift is suggesting how it is perfectly normal to eat humans. How is eating one another good for everyone? Yes, it might “reduce” the size of our world’s population, but the terrifying part of this proposal is that the “bloodsuckers are entirely human” (Foster 18).
