We first see irony come up when the family stops for lunch, and the grandmother tells Red Sam he is a good man. She comes up with this reasoning solely due to his appearance. It comes up because he questions why he would let the three boys get free gas, and cant get over the fact that they stole in a small town like his. The irony shows up when the family later meets The Misfit, in a small town just like the one where Red Sam’s is. Not only is it ironic due to location, it is also ironic due to what the grandmother tells the misfit. She explains to him that she believes he is a good guy. One area where this is evident is the glasses. Glasses are universally known to help people see the world in the correct way. Ironically in the story, when we meet The Misfit, he’s wearing glasses. These glasses do the opposite of what glasses are supposed to do. Instead of correcting his vision and making him see the world like a normal man would, they make him see the world through the eyes of a psychopath. In the beginning of the story, the grandmother explains why she dresses so nicely for the road trip. She says “In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once she was a lady” (12).
