On one hand, Obdulio is illiterate and works as a paperboy for an unfair boss. He also gets beaten up by and mugged by other people as well as living with his grandmother and two little sisters in a tiny apartment. However, at night a magical figure leads him to an education, he meets a murga and has the opportunity to work for them, and a generous bartender preaches about the importance of an education to him in addition to giving him free food. These two worlds that Obdulio lives in seem to collide when the kind bartender dies and the theatre group he is stage manager for can no longer think of any lyrics to sing. It is here when Obdulio’s magical tutor is able to bring them new lyrics and the magic of their performing returned. The story happens during carnival, showing much of the Uruguayan culture. Obdulio’s life shows many problems that the lower class face here such as lack of education, poor jobs, working from an early age to support your family, and having people who don’t work as hard as you take what you have earned. It also shows how important carnival is and how everyone is affected positively by the magic of Lord Momo and the changed attitudes of the people surrounding
