Most students have an identity, an interest, or a talent that defines them in an essential way. Tell us about yourself

I was about five when I first fell in love. That was the year that I focused on dance, after my physician’s recommendation that it could help my Scoliosis. I can still remember stepping into the dance studio for the first time and feeling happy and excited. I was ready to test my physical limits and be free. Due to my medical conditions, outside of the dance studio I was bombarded with “could nots”. I could not do sports because a hit to the back of the head could paralyze me. I could not ride a roller coaster because it could exacerbate my condition. I could not go to school because I needed

No one, but her, even knew that I had any limitations. This allowed me to explore the boundaries of my body. I learned exactly how far I could push myself. Rapidly, I began to exceed even my own expectations. Under the guidance of my teacher, my talents as a dancer grew exponentially. With every new technique I mastered, my appetite for dance swelled. It was not long until most of my time was spent dancing and thinking about dancing. Every day I got better and better at expressing my thoughts, emotions, and beliefs through innovative dances. In fact, nowadays, it is almost impossible to separate me from dance. Through dance, I illustrate that conditions and circumstances are not what define a person. It is their determination to succeed, their commitment to the things that they love, their willingness to put in the work needed to excel, and their ability to push limits and become the greatest version of themselves that they can be that defines them. As I help younger dancers, I teach them not only dance fundamentals, but I also help instill in them the discipline, confidence, passion, and sense of perseverance that dance has given …show more content…
What’s the best part? What advice would you give a younger sibling or friend (assuming they would listen to you)? I believe that the hardest part of being a teenager is finding your place in the world, as you are discovering the harsh realities of life. As a teenage I am too young to vote or do many things. However, I am expected to be responsible and take charge of things. Currently I teach dance to 8-12 year old children, along with some youths with special needs. I am expected to have all the answers and be their mentor, which is difficult because I don’t yet have the life experiences to answer some of their hardest

After finding a dance class and contemplating for a long while, I finally gathered up courage to try it. The hour train ride was nerve-racking; I was on my way to a dance studio, somewhere I would’ve never imagined myself going. I ended up arriving an hour early, before everyone else. Greeted by an empty hall, I sat…

Taking the first part of this chapter, “learning how to dance” is not a straight path traveling forward, but it is more of a journey of discovery and trial and error. For me, occasionally I am very hard on myself and I experience the feeling of “I feel like I’m not getting better at this” or “I feel like I’m getting worse at this”. During our discussion in class on Monday, Professor Hapke stated that Deborah Hayes says that the body…

The short interview with Lauren Anderson is so inspiring that gives me an insight into passion and success as well as motivates me to persist in following my dream. Anderson’s story of her career as a principal ballerina seems quite simple and typical as she started early at seven, soon became a principal dancer of Houston Ballet, and then now is giving back to the society by teaching ballet to children of “underserved” community. However, I believe behind that story are all strenuous efforts and untiring perseverance along with her outstanding talent that kept her lifelong dream alive and made it come true. I can feel in her a great passion for the ballet career in every word she said and every story she told. Because ballet is hard and highly…

Dance as a profession is very hard on our bodies both physically and mentally. Personally, this is something that I ask myself every day, but I know that deep down inside that dance is what I live for. Twyla Tharp realized that if you create art and love dance, you’d best believe in yourself with no ulterior motives. It took her seven minute dance on stage to give Tharp the development backbone she needed to continue in the dance career. Martha Graham once said that it takes ten years to become a dancer.…

It seems logical to conclude that due to dance teachers and their students interacting at the micro level of society, they are known to have one of the most significant impacts on a dancer's life. To validate this perspective, I observed the infamous dance teacher Abby Lee Miller during Dance Moms Season One to see how she influenced her highly impressionable young dancers. Miller has a very opinionated view of her dancers performances. Second place is not an option! This places an extreme amount of pressure on her dancers to be perfect.…

In dance, you learn quickly that without pure dedication and drive you will never be successful. While talent can come naturally, skill and technique only come with hard work. I spent countless hours in dance studios growing up, working tirelessly to hone these skills and perfect technique. A lifetime of dance taught me what it means to have discipline and dedication to a craft, values which I have also seen reflected in my clinical experiences. Medicine is a practice which calls for just as much discipline, dedication, and drive.…

On the first day of Dance 101 we were asked to write down what dance meant to us, my response was that dance was a personal expression through movement and a way to honor, and keep traditions alive. When I registered for this course I knew I would enjoy it because I love dance but what I got was an amazing journey without going anywhere that has increased my desire to travel the world and explore for myself. While taking this course my view of what dance is has expanded from my initial response to include a way to celebrate, release, entertain, and share you culture with others. Learning the history of dance has increased my appreciation of it because when I watch dancing now I can see the influences from the past and sometimes from other cultures.…
