Linearity is a theme seen throughout architecture from the modernist era. It is present in many different styles such as Frank Lloyd Wrights Prairie School Style of architecture seen around the 1890’s to 1920’s. Following this Frank Lloyd Wright’s Textile style of architecture is seen to have strong links to linearity. Another key style showing linear themes is streamline Moderne otherwise known as Art Moderne. This modernist theme emerged in the 1930s. Its architectural style emphasized curving forms, long horizontal lines, and sometimes-nautical elements. One final Architectural style also deriving from Frank Lloyd Wright that shows surprising links to linearity although its focus is on natural links is the style of Organic Architecture. Frank Lloyd Wright’s mentor Louis Sullivan started the ideal that form follows function within architecture. These ideals are some of the most well known within architecture and are seen throughout the modernist era. Frank Lloyd Wright grew upon these ideas when developing his modernist style of architecture called Organic architecture. He wanted this style to follow the idea that “form and function are one” . A commercial cooking school I designed on a natural hill site has very strong links to the style of organic architecture with natural materials used and the building itself almost growing out of the site, working with it instead of against it. My design not only has these links to the organic architecture style present throughout the modernist era, but also shows links to the linearity seen in hundreds of modernist buildings, and those that fit into both these
